We had to pawn Piggy Sue's litter of cute little piglets to evil Farmer McCavity to pay for the CD pressing so please don't copy or download this album from filesharing sites. Buy an official copy direct from facebook.com/theewaltons or the piglets will die!

Thee Waltons - A memoir from the West Country Walton Boy...

Bloody hell where does all the time go? There have been several acres worth of carrots spat, turnips lobbed, rubber chickens throttled and unmentionable things done with marrows since I first met Thee Waltons back in 1992. That meeting was in the way of a black and white postcard with a whole host of bizarre looking bumpkin characters on it. Well I say bizarre, maybe up in the smoke, but this card landed on the mat of The White Ball Inn in Devon, so they pretty much looked like the clientele on market Tuesday. They wanted a gig on our tiny stage, I didn’t think we’d get them all on there, Verge said it didn’t matter. I said we couldn’t pay much, Verge said they didn’t want much. I asked if they were any good, he replied ‘Yip’ how could we refuse?

We managed to get the band featured in the local paper, I can’t remember how we described them but I think it was a cross between Matchbox and The Wurzels, we got more phone calls asking just how much like the latter they were than the former. The gig was a packed one, the locals turned up in their droves, as did the local scooter boys and girls who used to frequent our psychobilly gigs. I think it was them that brought the bags of carrots and started to throw them. Chewing up veg and gobbing at Verge and the boys was an evolution a little further down the line.

We liked the guys so much I decided to try and get them other gigs to make up their meagre fee (we were only charging £1.50 on the door, there was a recession on, apart from at the local greengrocers). One venue, The Piazza in Torquay went the whole hog, bails of straw the lot and bravely said the boys could stay the night, just bring sleeping bags. They hadn’t counted on this resulting in a game of ‘maggot wars’, you can imagine.

The White Ball had rooms but also a landlord who was as unpredictable as he was a diamond. We told the band that they should be really nice to him, mention West Ham a lot in a favourable capacity then casually ask if they could pitch their tent in the beer garden, he was bound to offer to stay in the pub. The next morning I was awoken by a very annoyed Lou the landlord ‘Eh boy, that band that put their tent up in my beer garden have nicked my fuckin’ milk’. And indeed they had, the rascals, not only that, nicked it and were long gone.

Not far though, the next destination was Ashburton, they were no strangers to that town having played The Golden Lion for Screaming Lord Sutch on several occasions. This time it was a different gaff for an all-dayer called ‘Day Tripper’, it was aptly named. The owner of that place was highly strung to say the least. One minute he was singing along with a rowdy Walton Family in the bar, the next threatening to have them thrown out. The festival was a poorly attended failure financially but a day we will never forget gig-wise. The Frantic Flintstones headlined, infamous front-man Chuck had brought along some ‘goodies’ certain members of Thee Waltons indulged in. Having sex on acid and speed in a tent was a first for at least one of their number, trouble is nobody noticed any behavioural difference, apart from the girl maybe. The night ended with the landlord setting dogs on the tent the band were in before pulling out the pegs. Luckily for the inhabitants most of them had no idea what planet they were on let-alone what had happened, even when the bobbies turned up. Needless to say that venue was never one again for the Inbred Kings of Vegabilly.

I can hardly believe that it was so long ago and the fellas are still yipping and belting out tunes that are a must for any party, even ones thrown by vegans. Songs by Green Day, drunken sailors, countless rockabilly bands and ones they wrote themselves are contained in this shiny 5” of pleasure made purely for your carrot crunching, kitchen implement abusing enjoyment. This much mayhem can only be pumped out with such panache if you have had as long as this lot to perfect it. And perfect it they have, go on stick it on, I bet you can’t not ‘Yip’and throw a carrot.
