Chasing Infinity

"Hey Chinfin, you caught Infinity yet?" "Nope, still working on it..."

July 18, 2011

Hello!

Our singer wanted the band to have a go at writing some blog posts, so here I am (Paul), giving it a go. :)

So, what's new in the land of Chinfin...land? Well, we played a gig last Friday at the Shipping Forecast in Liverpool which turned out to be one of my personal favourites yet, and given the circumstances at the start of the week, that might not have been forseeable due to Meg having trouble getting back up from York and Henry not being able to play his last gig with us (sad times indeed).

Luckily, help was at hand, *cue superhero music*, I asked one of my good friends, Mark, if he could fill in for Meg, and given that he's a phenomenal drummer and how well he performed with us at the Masque back in December, I had no doubt that he could get us out of a pickle again this time. As for the missing bassist, our very own Rob switched instruments to schlap the bass, leaving me to mould 2 guitar part songs into 1 part.

We've played as a 4 piece at a previous gig in the Bier Keller, which had the instrument filler extraordinare that is Rob filling in on the drums that time. Anyways, after 2 practises, Rob, Mark and me were ready, but oh noes, what about Adele?! She couldn't make practise, so pressure was somewhat in the air, but come Friday night, we did what Chasing Infinity like to think we do best and we just went for it. Needless to say, the results provided me with a smile on my face throughout. :)

So, now what do we do? Henry has left the Chinfin family and we shall miss his infectious personality and talent, and I'll personally miss the random jams him and I would break out into in practises. :'(

And so, the next step for Chinfin will be an interesting one. I have ideas for how the band can progress next, but we shall see about that... In the meantime, once Rob, Adele and me have our new student house, we can have our own band practise space in there, which will be a great chance to really work on what we have without having to rely on having limited time rehearsals in a booked out practise space. As for new things, I've got some new songs up my sleeve that have 'Chinfin' written all over them, and some other new songs are currently waiting to be Chinfin'd up after Adele, Rob and me jammed them out the other week, and I'm looking forward to playing them, so it hopefully shouldn't be too long that they're ready to be unleashed live.

Anyways, we're hoping to record soon, not sure when or what songs yet, but all we know is that we want to get on it! As for gigs, our next gig is 1st September at Shipping Forecast again, so if you're around the Liverpool area, it'd be great to see you there! :D

Until the next time, cheerio!
Paul x

3 Cards Short

Why Websites Like UnsignedPunk.com Are Awesome

July 15, 2011

The music industry as we know it is dying. At least, the music industry as those of us who are old enough to remember the 80's or earlier know it.

We're all aware of this. It's is not a secret. The digital age has all but wiped out desire for the hard copy medium. It seems like the people who want vinyls and cd's are the ones who once possessed those things and hold them to some sort of sentimental value... them and hoarders... haha. :) Naw, they're *Collector's*. ;)

So record labels don't want to give equipment advances or studio time as freely anymore. They're having to get creative to make money because they're not selling nearly as many cd's and the burden of payment, once again, falls on the sucker musician. How many of you also have reverbnation profiles? I think that is a really helpful website but everything there has a price. You have to watch out for sharks.

People approach us via reverbnation more and more about getting us on their comp or on an interview in their zine but they always want money. We've only been asked to contributed to one comp since our inception six months ago, whose producers weren't asking for money up front.

Anyways, without getting into the whole "sharks" and what's appropriate to pay for and what's not, I want to try and keep this to the point and that is websites like unsignedpunk.com are fucking awesome.

Thanks, guys. You have provided a free place for bands to get their name out there a bit and network with other bands. That is essence of punk rock. Damn the man!

The only thing left for people to realize is that the day of the Rock Star is pretty much over. It's true that there's no "I" in team, as cheesy as that old saying is. Cooperation, communication and moral support between indie bands will strengthen this modern turn in recording arts and live performance. "Circle the figurative wagons". This service has been provided not just so we can post our own music but so that we can keep up with each other and help cross promote.

When I was taking theory classes we were encouraged to ask our classmates to accompany us in graded performances, etc. and to return favors. This website could make cooperation like that even more accessible to us if there was a way to keep track of which bands are in our vicinity. Not that we should physically play in each others bands but that we should be gigging together. I'm in Santa Cruz, Ca. so I'd like to know which bands are in California and which bands will be coming through, etc.

One more thing... when you're playing shows (and I am guilty of this... I strive to not do it anymore) stay and watch the other bands that you are playing with. Maybe they'll stay and watch you too. It's not about "me". It's about "us". There's no I in team... hahaha.

Yeah. Coffee. Duurr.

Thanks, unsignedpunk.com. ♥

~Snow~
